The final day of the 2025 Veikkausliiga made headlines for the wrong reasons as HJK's home match against title winners KuPS was halted due to crowd trouble, before the champions signed off in style with a 2-0 win. Meanwhile, Inter Turku beat Ilves to take the final European place and finish in second place.

After retaining the Veikkausliiga title last Sunday and earning a first UEFA Conference League (UECL) League Phase win over Slovan Bratislava on Thursday, today's final match of the season was supposed to cap off a historic week for KuPS.

But just 11 minutes in, the players were forced off the pitch, due to the actions of some HJK supporters who set off flares and fireworks inside the ground.

However, after a delay of around 45 minutes, the teams were back out, and it was KuPS who adapted better to the disruptions, taking the lead in the 19th minute.

Loanee Ricardo Friedrich endured a horrible moment on his final appearance in the HJK goal - under pressure, he passed the ball straight to Samuel Pasanen, who set up Agon Sadiku for an easy finish.

Four minutes into the second half, KuPS added the cherry on top of the cake when Mohamed Toure cut in from the left wing and hammered the ball past Friedrich to put the Kuopio side 2-0 in front.

Though Sadiku missed a penalty late on, nothing could stop the Canaries' party at full-time, as they celebrated their eighth league title with a large contingent of travelling fans who made the trip to the home of the record champions.

After the title race went down to the penultimate round of fixtures, KuPS won their second championship in a row by six points in the end, taking 67 from their 32 matches.

HJK had to settle for fifth place having failed to win any of their 10 games in the Championship Group, but can console themselves with their Suomen Cup win earlier in the season, which gives them a UECL place.

Inter Turku have finished second in the table and qualified for next season's UECL after they won 2-0 at home to Ilves, who drop to third having already secured their place in Europe for 2026.

Knowing defeat could leave them with nothing to show for a season in which they led the standings for the majority of the regular season, the home side made a brilliant start with two goals in the first 10 minutes.

First, a Florian Krebs corner was met by a towering near-post header by Luka Kuittinen, before goalkeeper Eetu Huuhtanen's long clearance picked out Dimitri Legbo, who lofted it over Otso Virtanen in the Ilves goal to double the advantage.

The Tampere side created a handful of efforts on goal over the following 80 minutes, but failed to generate any big chances as Inter Turku coasted to victory, their first win in four, to finish second on 61 points, one more than Ilves, who finished third.

FC Inter's win meant it was SJK who missed out on a place in Europe, although they did all they could on the final day with a 3-0 win over Gnistan.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half, when Alenis Vargas produced a wonderful cross with the outside of his foot, which was powered in by the head of Kevin Appiah Nyarko.

Gnistan's afternoon got worse late in the opening half, when Vargas was sent through on goal but was stopped in his tracks by the advancing Alexandro Craninx, and the referee showed the visiting goalkeeper a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It took the hosts until 12 minutes from time to make their man advantage count, as Kelvin Pires teed up Kasper Paananen to score his 17th of the season and extend his margin of victory in the golden boot race, going three clear of his three nearest challengers.

Rasmus Karjalainen added a third late on, but there will be disappointment for SJK, who finish fourth and miss out on Europe by a single point.

Gnistan finishing 16 points behind HJK despite their Helsinki rivals failing to win any of their 10 Championship Group matches goes a long way to proving how likely Gnistan were to finish sixth as soon as the league split into two.
