Ben Davies’ second-half header helped Wales extend their unbeaten run to seven internationals, as they kicked off their FIFA World Cup qualifying (WCQ) campaign with a 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan that was perhaps more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

It took the hosts just nine minutes to break the deadlock, as Daniel James grabbed his eighth international goal with a swept shot from inside the area that took a deflection and dribbled through the goalkeeper’s legs.

That lead evaporated shortly after the half-hour mark though, when a harsh penalty was given against Connor Roberts, who turned his back on a cross that hit his trailing arm.

Askhat Tagybergen converted the resulting spot-kick, although Karl Darlow got a good foot on the ball before it trickled over the line.

The Dragons were fueled by a sense of injustice, which only grew when Maksim Samorodov got away with only a yellow card for a high and late tackle on Roberts.

David Brooks then curled off-target from the resulting free-kick, as Craig Bellamy’s side dominated possession, but that incisive final ball was missing, and they were nearly made to pay as Islam Chesnokov had a strike saved at the other end.

Wales’ frustrations disappeared 76 seconds after the break though, when Sorba Thomas whipped a vicious corner to the back post where it was headed home by captain Davies.

This time, there was to be no Kazakh response. Indeed, Jordan James nearly made it 3-1 with a low shot from near the penalty spot that was expertly clawed away by Aleksandr Zarutskiy, who also made a sprawling save from Neco Williams’ free-kick.

There was a procession of chances, with Josh Sheehan and Liam Cullen also coming close. But as the extra insurance of another goal eluded the hosts, the nerves set in.

Abat Aymbetov and Chesnokov had openings for the Hawks, who were sniffing an end to their five-match losing streak in competitive outings.

There was to be no comeback though, as Rabbi Matondo put the game to bed with his first international goal in injury time, making a late run to convert Thomas’ cross.

As such, Kazakhstan’s 12-year wait for a win in World Cup qualifying continues, whereas Bellamy remains unbeaten since taking charge of Wales last summer.
