Northern Ireland moved joint-top of Group A in World Cup qualifying (WCQ) after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Slovakia, extending the Green and White Army’s unbeaten home run to eight matches (W7, D1).

Coming into the contest on the back of qualifying wins over Germany and Luxembourg in the September international break, Slovakia travelled to Belfast full of confidence.

That was quickly dampened, though, as Michael O’Neill’s side made a dream start inside 18 minutes, with Ethan Galbraith’s inviting cross being diverted into his own net by Patrik Hrosovsky.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, the Green and White Army continued to stamp their authority on proceedings, as Justin Devenny saw a long-range strike saved by Martin Dubravka and Jamie Reid fluffed his lines when well-placed in the box after good work by Conor Bradley.

Having lost only one of their last six WCQ away games (W2, D3), the Falcons managed to survive further pressure from the hosts, limiting the damage going into the break.

Northern Ireland remained the dominant side at the start of the second half, with Bradley firing narrowly over from range and Reid seeing a well-taken finish correctly ruled out for offside.

The hosts’ profligacy was nearly punished shortly after the hour mark when David Strelec was released through on goal, but the Middlesbrough forward could only fire his low effort inches wide of the far post.

That miss proved to be costly for Slovakia, as the Green and White Army doubled their lead with time ticking into the final 10 minutes.

A poor punch from Dubravka found Trai Hume on the edge of the box, and the defender guided a superb first-time volley into the unguarded net to give the hosts breathing room.

Sokoli were unable to mount a late comeback after that goal, as Northern Ireland held firm during the closing stages to secure a vital three points.
