A dominant second-half display saw the Netherlands secure a 4-0 win over Lithuania in Amsterdam to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup (FWC).

With the hosts still having work to do to secure their place at next summer’s finals, they set about their business early, as Cody Gakpo flicked on a free-kick at the near post that Edvinas Gertmonas did well to stop.

The deadlock, though, was broken just after the quarter-hour mark as Frenkie De Jong pounced on a loose ball in the attacking third and played through Tijjani Reijnders. The Manchester City man had a narrow angle and an advancing goalkeeper to beat, but did so with aplomb, clipping the ball into the far top corner.

There were quickfire chances for a second as Donyell Malen’s dangerous ball across the box was cleared and Virgil Van Dijk’s header from the resulting corner was well saved by Gertmonas.

Reijnders then came a post’s width away from his and his nation’s second with an outside of the boot effort from the edge of the box.

Lithuania, meanwhile, were struggling to get anything going and had their keeper to thank for keeping the deficit at one at the break as he reacted well to Jurrien Timber drifting to the back post.

Markas Beneta entered as a half-time sub and was immediately involved as he made a crucial intervention with a couple of orange shirts lurking for a tap-in.

The Trispalves were still only a goal behind despite the Dutch dominance, and Tomas Kalinauskas had a half-chance saved by Bart Verbruggen.

However, the floodgates opened soon after as Ronald Koeman’s side bagged three goals in five minutes.

First, Edgaras Utkus was adjudged by VAR to have handled in the box, allowing Gakpo to coolly slot home from the spot.

A couple of minutes later, the Liverpool man turned provider for Xavi Simons, who shimmied past a couple of green shirts and finished in the box.

Malen completed the five-minute blitz when he scored a lovely solo effort to put the result beyond doubt.

Edgaras Jankauskas’ side had no response as they fell to a fifth defeat in what has ultimately proven to be a winless qualification campaign. The Dutch, on the other hand, will be in North America next summer after securing back-to-back FWC spots having missed out in 2018.
