Clara Tauson anticipates a difficult task when she faces the German veteran Tatjana Maria in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday morning in Melbourne.

Tauson's opponent is the 37-year-old Tatjana Maria, the world number 90. The German is the oldest player in the top 100 on the WTA tour, and she is known, among other things, for having a very specific game.

Tauson, who won the warm-up tournament in Auckland leading up to the Australian Open, has met Maria twice on the WTA Tour with one win each to show for their efforts.

The 22-year-old Dane's own, explosive and agressive style of playing is in deep contrast to Maria. Tauson recalls her two previous matches against Maria.

"She has a very irregular style of play, where she slices from both sides, and she just hopes that you make a million mistakes so that she wins the match", she says to dr. dk.

Many players often slice on the backhand side, but Tatjana Maria likes to do it from both sides.

"Of course, I have to try to limit my mistakes, but it is also important that I go in and play my own game and stay true to it. And then we have to see what happens", says Tauson.

This is the third time the German has been in the 2nd round at the Australian Open and she has never managed to make it to the 3rd round in Melbourne.

Last year she beat Colombian Camila Osoria in the 1st round by 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, before she was beaten by the Italian Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 3-6.

2024 was not a great year at all for the German, who failed to get further than the 2nd round in Grand Slams as well as Masters tournaments.

The winner of the match will most likely face World nr. 1, Aryna Sabalenka in the 3rd round.
