Sick Rune forced to withdraw in Monte Carlo: 'Why Holger again,' says mother

A mentally and physically drained Holger Rune retired in the first round of the ATP tournament in Monte-Carlo after having lost the first set 6-2 and trailing 0-3 in the second to Nuno Borges from Portugal

Holger Rune had a dreadful start to the clay season when he crashed of the ATP tournament in Monte Carlo in the first round to Nuno Borges.

The Dane lost the first set 6-2 and subsequently called a doctor over to examine him in between the first and the second set. 

Rune told the doctor that he had been suffering from illness in the days leading up to the tournament. 

Rune returned to the court in the second set, but down 3-0 the Dane chose to withdraw.

"It's a tournament that means so much to him. This hurts", said his mother and agent Aneke Rune after the match.

Holger Rune lives in Monaco on a daily basis and trains on these courts, which made it even more painful for him to retire today. 

"I simply don't understand how he can be so unlucky. I know there are two other players who also have a stomach virus. But why Holger again?"

He hasn't been out, he's been sleeping and living healthily. It's terrible for him to be hit right here. It could happen at any other tournament, but just not right here", said Aneke Rune to TV Sport.

The next tournament for Holger Rune will be the the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona.
