2nd seed, Clara Tauson, dismissed bad memories of last year's troubles on grass, when she kicked off her grass court season with a relatively comfortable 7-5, 6-2 win against Australia's Kimberly Birrell in the first round of the Nottingham Open.

It was Tauson first win ever on grass in the main draw.

Tauson had a record of two wins and seven losses on grass before the match against Birrell, and the two wins both came in qualifying campaign for Wimbledon in 2023.

But the poor record on grass was broken for Tauson in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament in Nottingham with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Australia's Kimberly Birrell.

"It is my first victory in a match in a main tournament on grass ever. So I am very happy. Kimberly is great on grass, so it was a good win for me", says Tauson in the winner's interview.

Tauson, who is ranked 23 in the world, was considered favorite against Birrell, who is ranked 79 in the world, despite the statistics on grass.

While Tauson played her first match on grass this season, Birrell had already played a handful of matches on the surface.

Perhaps that was the reason why Tauson got off to a rusty start and was broken in her first service game.

However, Tauson broke right back to tie the game at 1-1. Later, she broke again to take a 4-3 lead, but the Australian broke right back and restored parity at 4-4.

In a close opening set, Tauson recoved her hard-hitting game to gain another break and win the set 7-5.

The difference between the two players proved more extensive in the second set where Tauson played steady and served well, while Birrell struggled to hang on.

Tauson broke the Australian and went ahead 3-1 and soon after made it 4-1, but the Australian fought on to stay in the match and reduced the gap to 2-4.

In the final phase, Tauson raised her level even more and won the last two games and thus the match.
