It ends a disappointing Wimbledon for Goransson, after the and men's doubles partner Sem Verbeek also fell at the first hurdle on Wednesday in three sets, despite their status as 14th seeds.
The Swede and Chan would therefore need to cause an upset against El Salvador's Arevalo and China's Zhang to make it into the second week of the Championships.
They were holding their own early on, surviving two break points in the fifth game to go 3-2 ahead, but the could not do the same in the ninth - this time the second seeds clinched the game with their second break point to go 5-4 up.
A mammoth tenth game then ensued, which saw Goransson and Chan fail to capitalise on two break points of their own, as their opponents eventually secured the 6-4 set win on their third set point.
In the second set, Arevalo and Zhang took things up a notch, breaking in the first and third games to take a 4-0 lead.
Goransson and Chan - both 31 - could not find an answer against their more senior opponents, and despite getting one game on the board, lost serve in their next service game without winning a point, handing Arevalo and Zhang the 6-4, 6-1 victory in one hour and six minutes.
