The Houston Texans released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday due to character issues.

Local Houston news station KPRC 2 reported that there was 'friction' in the Texans locker room surrounding Gardner-Johnson as he was vocally critical of teammates, the team, and had demanded a trade.

The veteran safety made headlines prior to his release after standing over quarterback Baker Mayfield during the Texans' Week 2 loss to Tampa Bay when he went down with an injury.

Tampa Bay is now 3-0 on the year while the Texans are 0-3.

Gardner-Johnson has just 14 tackles this season with no pass breakups and no interceptions. His 58.9 coverage grade ranks 70th out of 123 safeties this season and sits 61st overall.

The 27-year-old, who was part of the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl squad last season, will now look to be on his fourth team in three years.
