The Nigeria international, who formed part of Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga-winning side two seasons ago, believes Wirtz has all the qualities to succeed under Jurgen Klopp’s successor, Arne Slot, at Anfield.
"With Flo (Wirtz), don’t worry, you guys will enjoy him soon," Boniface told Flashscore in an interview via a roundtable organised by Werder Bremen.
"We all know how brilliant the guy is. I understand why there’s a lot of talk coming. But trust me, Flo is a wonderful guy and player."
Unbeaten champions together
Boniface and Wirtz were key pillars in Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side that made history by going unbeaten in the Bundesliga in 2023/24, the first team ever to do so, while also clinching the DFB-Pokal and reaching the Europa League final.
Wirtz was the creative heartbeat of that team, delivering 11 goals and 11 assists in the league and earning widespread praise for his intelligence, flair, and maturity beyond his years.
Boniface, meanwhile, provided the cutting edge up front, forming one of Europe’s most entertaining attacking partnerships.
Tough start at Anfield
That success earned Wirtz a £116m (with add-ons) move to Liverpool in the summer, as the Reds sought to refresh their attacking options and add creativity behind the forwards.
However, the 22-year-old has endured a testing start, failing to score in 15 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
Despite flashes of his quality, Wirtz is still adjusting to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. But Boniface believes it’s only a matter of time before his former teammate starts to make a decisive impact.
"He is hardworking, and soon people will see the real him. He will deliver, and I am rooting for him," Boniface insisted.
Liverpool’s next test
Wirtz will have another chance to prove his worth this weekend when Liverpool face Manchester City in a blockbuster Premier League clash on Sunday.
The Reds head into the game buoyed by their impressive Champions League victory over Real Madrid in midweek, and fans will be hoping the German playmaker can translate his Leverkusen brilliance to England’s biggest stage.
