Yirenkyi arrived at Coventry with huge expectations after becoming the most expensive signing in the club’s history, but the 20-year-old has already offered glimpses of why Frank Lampard was so determined to bring him to England.
The Ghanaian midfielder joined from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in August after a breakthrough campaign in Denmark and a memorable 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored Ghana’s stoppage-time winner against Panama.
Yirenkyi made an immediate impression in his first appearance for Coventry, providing an assist in a 2-0 pre-season victory over AS Monaco.
Despite Coventry suffering a 3-0 defeat to reigning champions Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, Yirenkyi was handed a starting role by Lampard for his top-flight debut.
Three days later, he produced another decisive contribution, assisting Taiwo Awoniyi inside the opening three minutes as Coventry defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the League Cup.
Those early performances have reinforced the belief that Coventry have secured one of the most exciting young midfielders in the world.
And Thomas-Asante, who has shared the pitch with Yirenkyi for both club and country, believes there is much more to come.
"I call him the modern N’Golo Kante. He’s so quiet and keeps himself to himself. However, he is a really confident character. He is quietly confident," he told Premier League TV.
Thomas-Asante was already familiar with Yirenkyi before the midfielder arrived at Coventry, having played alongside him for Ghana during their historic World Cup campaign.
When Yirenkyi scored the dramatic winner against Panama, Thomas-Asante was on the pitch and the moment remains particularly special to him.
“Just because of the love I have for him. When the ball hit the back of the net, he ran off and I was on the other side, and I couldn’t believe we had scored this late in the game.
“There were two groups of huddles celebrating. I remember I was looking at Caleb and I was so pleased for him. That whole feeling resonated with me and I enjoyed that,” the forward added.
For Thomas-Asante, there was genuine pride in watching a player he had come to know closely announce himself on the biggest stage.
Yirenkyi had already established himself as one of Ghana’s most promising young players during his time at Nordsjaelland, but the World Cup elevated his profile.
Thomas-Asante admits he played a role in bringing the Ghanaian to the Sky Blues after speaking with head coach Lampard.
“I don’t take too much credit, maybe a little. Frank Lampard called me during the World Cup and he was very honest with his appreciation for Caleb and asked me for my opinions on him,” he revealed.
“The club were aware of his talent and many clubs across the world.”
The immediate focus for the Ghanaians now switches back to the Premier League. Coventry's first home league game of their return to the top flight will be against fellow newly promoted side Hull City at home on Saturday.
