Contrasting fortunes for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in CAF competition

Tshepang Moremi gave Orlando Pirates a 1-0 victory over Namibian side African Stars in neutral Gaborone on Saturday to put one foot in the CAF Champions League group stage, while Kaizer Chiefs were beaten in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Pirates were made to sweat for their victory in their second-round, first-leg clash in Botswana, but Moremi struck with 15 minutes remaining to seal the win ahead of the return fixture, which is scheduled for next Friday.

Pirates were full value for the win as they launched wave after wave of attacks, and Moremi’s superb ball sent Yanela Mbuthuma through on goal in the first half, but he could not beat goalkeeper Mervin Kasetura.

Mbuthuma then fired wide and, in the second half, was one-on-one with the keeper, who rushed off his goal line to make the save.

Chiefs were beaten 1-0 by Zambian side Red Arrows and the lack of an away goal could come back to haunt them.

It means if Arrows score once in the return leg, Chiefs will need three goals to progress, and with those hard to come by of late, it looks a tall order.

The game was level until the 76th minute, when Arrows opened the scoring through Alassane Diarra as he powered in a header from a corner.

Chiefs will have it all to do in the second leg if they are to reach the group stage of the Confederation Cup.
