Lech Poznań on Thursday claimed the Polish Super Cup for the seventh time, defeating Górnik Zabrze 3-1 to boost their moral before the crucial clash in the second round of the qualification for Champions League against AGF. Coach Niels Frederiksen, did not hide his satisfaction with the victory. "However, it was our first official match and we still have a few things to work on," he noted.

This was the third trophy won by Lech Poznan under the leadership of Frederiksen. In the previous two seasons, "Kolejorz" secured the Polish championship title.

"Before the match, I told the players that since I arrived here, we've finished every season with a trophy. I suggested that maybe now we could start a tradition of beginning each new season by winning a trophy. And that's what we did, so we're very happy about it," said the Lech coach.

He added that his team deserved the win, but at the same time admitted there are still some areas to improve.

"It was the first official match of the season, and you can always see there are things we should work on. All the more so because on Tuesday we have a crucial Champions League qualifier ahead of us. We played compactly in defense, and when we pressed higher up the pitch, we did it consistently. We can be pleased with that aspect. However, we need to demand better quality from ourselves when we have possession, especially in the first third. In the first half, we made a few mistakes in that area," he analyzed.

Last season, Lech often managed to turn matches around, even after conceding first. That was also the case on Thursday.

"It's very important that we are able to change the course of a match. We have players who believe in what we're doing and don't panic if things aren't going our way. It's important that the club brings in players who not only have high quality but are also mentally strong. You don't win matches just with your feet, but also with your head," the Dane emphasized.
