Griekspoor was set to face compatriot Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the Masters 1000 tournament. The two Dutchmen played their best tournaments in Toronto last week, where they both made the fourth round.
Griekspoor, who's now ranked 56th, was forced to withdraw with an injury he picked up in training on Thursday, he told Ziggo Sport.
"An abdominal muscle played up during yesterday's training. I stopped very quickly from the moment I felt it, and I knew it was wrong. I got a lot of treatments last night and this morning, but it's far from smart or possible to step onto the court," said Griekspoor, who couldn't tell if it was a strain or a tear yet.
"I tore that same abdominal muscle last year during the French Open. I don't think it's as bad as it was back then; it feels relatively better. Hopefully, I have enough time to be fit for New York."
Griekspoor's plan is now to return home and recover before heading to New York early for the US Open, which starts on Sunday, August 23rd.
Botic van de Zandschulp will now play 'lucky loser' Alexander Shevchenko in Friday's first-round matchup.
