At 30, Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy is continuing to prove his elite goalscoring credentials in Europe. His 23 goals in 31 appearances in Europe's top competition underline his status as a top-level finisher.

The art of scoring goals comes with experience. Above all, it requires patience. That is a quality Guirassy has developed over time, as he turns 30. The Borussia Dortmund striker scored twice away to Sabah and has now scored four goals in three Champions League appearances.

His team has won every time he has found the net. Three of those goals came with his weaker left foot, while the fourth was a right-footed penalty he won himself against Villarreal.

Exceptionally adept in front of goal, the striker who chose to represent Guinea is continuing his honeymoon in the toughest tournament of them all.

He was already joint top scorer in the 2024/25 edition alongside Barcelona forward Raphinha. This season, Guirassy has already matched his four-goal tally from last year. That means he has rediscovered his scoring touch and is ready to repeat his best form.

In the win in Baku, the Guinean was not only a ruthless goalscorer. He also once again showed how well he combines with his teammates, dropping into midfield to set up runs from the other attacking players. Then, when called upon to be in the right place in front of goal, he delivered.

Better late than never

Being late is an abstract concept, especially in the modern era, when everything moves at an almost unsustainable speed. The Arles native demonstrated this with his definitive breakthrough at the age of 27, during the 2023/24 season, when he scored 28 goals in as many games for Stuttgart.

Ahead of him, with 36 goals, was Harry Kane, who had benefited considerably from the strength of his teammates at Bayern Munich.

Before moving to Germany, Guirassy also made history with Rennes. In the 2020/21 season, he scored the Breton club's first-ever Champions League goal, converting a penalty against Krasnodar in a 1-1 draw. From that moment on, he developed a perfect relationship with the most prestigious club competition in Europe.

Since arriving in Germany in the 2022/23 season, the African striker has scored 80 goals in 121 appearances in all competitions. Those figures confirm his remarkable goalscoring development after turning 25. In the Champions League, 21 of his 23 goals have come in the last three seasons. It is never too late, after all.

Mother Africa

Captain and goalscorer in Guinea's most recent win over Kenya, the 1996-born striker is now looking to make one final leap with the national team representing his parents' homeland.

His aim is to play at the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held next summer in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The event will break with the tradition of being staged between December and January, right in the middle of the European season.

After inspiring the National Elephants' first win in two matches, the Borussia Dortmund striker will be ready to lead his compatriots in their next two games against Eritrea in November.

The objective is to live up to expectations and, alongside currently top-placed South Africa, secure qualification for the continental tournament. For now, however, he will focus on improving his Champions League numbers, where his 23 goals make him the fifth-highest-scoring African player of all time.

Ahead of him are Sadio Mane and Samuel Eto'o, four and seven goals clear of him, respectively. Second on the list is Didier Drogba, with 44 goals, while Mohamed Salah leads the way with 50. For Serhou, however, there is still time to show that it is never too late. Age can also bring even better numbers. After all, he is only 30...
