Skanderborg AGF delivered a stellar performance on Thursday, defeating Montpellier 38–30 in the Champions League. The home side, Montpellier, were heavy favorites heading into the match, making it all the more surprising that Skanderborg AGF could return home with an eight-goal victory.

It was the second time in a week that Skanderborg AGF secured maximum points against the Champions League winners of 2003 and 2018.

The French side had no answer to the visitors' numerical advantage in attack and never came close to taking any points.

Skanderborg AGF now find themselves in a favorable position in the race for the two spots that lead to the main round.

Barcelona are cruising toward the group win with eight points after four rounds, while Skanderborg AGF sit comfortably in second place with five points.

The Danish team therefore has two opportunities to seal their advancement in the final two group matches.

Montpellier took the lead early on, but the nature of the match shifted after 15 minutes when Skanderborg AGF began employing a seven-on-six attacking strategy.

Johan Hansen led the way, converting all four of his attempts against Montpellier goalkeeper Rémi Desbonnet, and Skanderborg AGF went into the break with a four-goal lead.

The lead could have been even larger, had Emil Laerke and Gustav Bruun not missed the visitors' final two attempts.

The home side struggled significantly to contain Skanderborg AGF’s offense, which created a series of high-quality scoring chances.

Although Montpellier did manage to score into an empty net on a few occasions, the tactic ultimately proved to be a sound investment.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Magnus Petersen significantly elevated his performance, which further helped the lead to grow. Three consecutive goals extended the lead to seven, and when Kristján Kristjánsson made it 31–22, there was no longer any doubt about the outcome.
