It was a tight contest all the way, and fittingly ended in a draw when Nykøbing Falster and Odense Håndbold clashed in the first round of the Champions League on Sunday afternoon.

The scoreboard read 27-27 at the end of a match where Nykobing Falster squandered a golden opportunity to secure a surprise victory.

The home team had possession, but it seemed as though the players lost their nerve in the decisive seconds. The final attack fizzled out, and by the time Kristina "Mulle" Kristiansen finally unleashed a desperate shot, time had run out.

It has been two years since Nykobing Falster last competed at this elite level. On that occasion, the team finished last in the group stage, but Sunday's performance offers hope for a better outcome this time around.

Especially if Clara Lerby continues to play on the left wing the way she did on Sunday afternoon; the Swede caused Odense major problems and scored 12 goals.

It was Lerby who restored parity at 27-27 from a penalty throw with just over a minute remaining. When Odense turned the ball over shortly after, victory was suddenly within real reach.

Coach Niels Agesen called a timeout and devised a game plan for the final 27 seconds, but the players appeared content to settle for the single point.

This was the first of 14 group-stage matches for the two teams. Action resumes this coming weekend, with Odense hosting Croatia's Podravka, while Nykobing travels to Hungary to face Györ.
