Denmark were handed a reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done ahead of the European championships in women's handball when they suffered a 26-21 defeat against Germany in Odense.

The defeat marked Denmark’s first defeat since the World Championship quarter-final in December, and the team’s performance fell short of the level displayed during their victory over Norway a month ago.

In the first half, the Danish team wer outmatched in several areas. The Germans appeared to hold a physical advantage, winning the majority of the duels.

The Danes found it extremely difficult to unlock Germany’s "iron" defense during the first 30 minutes, managing only ten goals.

Denmark actually started well, taking a 4–3 lead, but a long drought followed. The Germans capitalized on this to pull ahead 7–4, prompting Helle Thomsen to call her first timeout.

The Germans went into the break with a 15–10 lead but  Denmark returned for the second half looking significantly sharper, and Anna Kristensen—who replaced Sandra Toft in goal—made an immediate impact with several strong saves.

However, the Danish team simply failed to capitalize on their strong opening phase to close the gap on the Germans.

Anna Kristensen continued to thwart the German shooters, boasting an 80% save rate after 15 minutes. At the other end, Trine Ostergaard scored three times during this stretch—including two from penalty throws—narrowing the deficit to 16–17.

Julie Scaglione, who has been struggling with an injury, hammered the ball into the net to make it 18–19, but Denmark could get no closer.

Germany were clearly the superior side in the final ten minutes, finding ways to score past Anna Kristensen. The Danes’ attacking play faltered, ultimately resulting in a five-goal victory for Germany.

Denmark faces another Golden League match on Sunday afternoon, this time against Norway.

On 3 December, the Danish team kicks off their European Championship campaign against Spain.
