Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or. The Bayern Munich striker became the fifth Englishman in history to receive the award, 25 years after Michael Owen achieved the feat. It is the sixth time a player from his nation has got their hands on the prestigious individual trophy, with other English winners Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966) and Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979).

Argentine great Lionel Messi remains the outright leader as the most successful Ballon d'Or winner (8). Cristiano Ronaldo is second, with five awards.

The Ballon d'Or has been awarded since 1956, when it was created by France Football magazine. For six editions, from 2010 to 2015, the award was combined with FIFA to name the world's best player.

From 2016 onwards, France Football and FIFA resumed holding separate awards. The Ballon d'Or was not awarded in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
