The Washington Capitals stomped the Carolina Hurricanes during their banner night, while the controversy in Detroit continues to roar as the Red Wings were shut out in their home opener.

Capitals 5-2 Hurricanes

The Washington Capitals played spoiler to the Hurricanes' banner night with an absolutely one-sided affair. Newly acquired forward Alex Tuch posted two goals, while eight total Caps players earned at least one assist on the night.

Dylan Stome (two assists), Jakob Chychrun (one goal, one assist), and Pierre-Luc Dubois (two assists) each finished with two points. Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson also had one goal each.

Caps goalie Logan Thompson finished with 31 saves, setting a career-high in season openers for one of this year's Vezina Trophy favorites.

The Canes, despite outshooting (33-27) and outhitting (32-19) the Caps, now start the season off with two losses coming off their Stanley Cup win. Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored the two for Carolina.

Rangers 2-0 Red Wings

It was a brutal home opener for the Red Wings, as the game got off to a rough start when fans booed former team captain Dylan Larkin, as the longstanding member has made it clear he doesn't want to play for the team anymore.

Between chants of "Sell the team!", fans taping over his jersey with 'loser' and 'traitor', and a scoreless night, the Red Wings open up their 2026-2027 season in the worst way humanly possible.

Sean Durzi scored the only even-strength goal of the night for the Rangers before Eeli Tolvanen sent in the empty-netter for his second of the season. Rookie goaltender Dyland Garand recorded his first career shutout after putting up 22 saves.

New York improved to 2-1-0 on the season.

Bruins 4-3 Jets

Down 3-2 with less than two minutes left in the third, Boston's Elias Lindholm scored on a tip-in to even things up and send the game into overtime. And, just like Lindholm with under two minutes left in the period, JJ Peterka scored the game-winner in overtime with under two minutes left on an assist from newly named team captain David Pastrnak.

Boston improved to 2-0 on the season as the Jets have now lost their home opener in back-to-back seasons.

Winnipeg's Kyle Connor extended his NHL season-opening goal streak to nine years after he tied things up 2-2 with a power-play goal at the start of the second period.

Blues 4-0 Stars

The St. Louis Blues ended the Dallas Stars' six-year streak of winning their season-opening games. It was largely due to goalie Joel Hafer's first shutout of the season during his first start, in which he put up 25 saves. Hafer recorded a career-high six shutouts last season.

Mason McTavish scored his first goal of the season in the first period, before Dalibor Dvorsky followed up with his first in the second. Then, in the third, both Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter scored their firsts on a pair of empty-netters.

Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Dallas had an opportunity after St. Louis' Brandon Carlo was given a game misconduct for a hit on Roope Hintz, but the Stars still couldn't capitalize.
