With both having made winning starts to the Betway Premiership and a new wave of optimism around Naturena, Kaizer Chiefs’ battle with Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday has some added spice.

We round up the numbers on one of the classic clashes in South African football.

0 – Sundowns are winless in their last three clashes with Chiefs, with one defeat and two draws. Both league games last season ended in stalemates, contributing to Sundowns losing their grip on the Betway Premiership title.

2 – Chiefs have won their opening two matches of the new campaign for the third season in a row after victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United.

2 – There have only ever been two hat-tricks in clashes between Chiefs and Sundowns. Johannes 'Chippa' Molatedi got one for Chiefs in an Ohlsson’s Challenge semi-final in 1987, and Collins Mbesuma did likewise when Chiefs won an epic league clash 4-3 in 2005. His three goals came in an 18-minute spell in the game.

4 – The biggest winning margin for both Chiefs and Sundowns in this fixture is four goals. Chiefs claimed wins by that margin in 1987 and 1992, while Sundowns’ successes have been more recent. They won 4-0 in August 2022 and then 5-1 in 2024, becoming the first team to score five goals in a fixture between these sides. They followed that up with another 4-0 win in the Carling Knockout a few months later.

5 – Donald Khuse, Chippa Molatedi, Thabo Mooki and Siyabonga Nomvethe have each scored five goals for Chiefs against Sundowns, the most in the National Soccer League (NSL) era.

7 – The greatest number of goals scored in a single fixture between the two sides. That was in a thrilling 4-3 win for Chiefs in the 2004/05 campaign.

9 – Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has scored nine goals against Chiefs, the most by any player in this fixture. He bettered the previous best mark of former Sundowns forward Lovemore Chafunya, who netted seven times between 1985 and 1991.

10 – The quickest goal scored in a fixture between these sides was by Peter Shalulile for Sundowns after only 10 seconds of their MTN8 semi-final second leg in 2023.

10 – Chiefs are without a victory in their last 10 league meetings with Sundowns, with seven defeats and three draws. Their last league success was a 2-1 victory at Loftus Versfeld in 2021. Sundowns have outscored Chiefs 19-5 across those last 10 league encounters.

15 – Across all competitions, Chiefs have won only one of their last 15 meetings with Sundowns. The Brazilians have won nine, with five draws. That lone Chiefs victory was an important one, as it came in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals in 2025 and they went on to lift the trophy.

21 – Chiefs’ 2-1 league victory at Loftus Versfeld in 2021 ended Sundowns’ 21-match unbeaten start to that league season.

22 – Chiefs have recorded 22 wins in home matches against Sundowns since the formation of the NSL in 1985, though none in their last 11 clashes (D4 L7) on their own patch. Chiefs last beat Sundowns at home in 2017. The Brazilians have won 15 times away to Chiefs, while there have been 18 draws.

82 – The number of league meetings between Chiefs and Sundowns since the formation of the NSL. Sundowns narrowly lead the head-to-head with 30 wins to 29 for Chiefs. There have also been 23 draws. Sundowns have outscored their opponents 86-84.

114 – The number of previous meetings between Chiefs and Sundowns in all competitions since the formation of the NSL, with Saturday’s clash to be the 115th. Chiefs have claimed 42 wins to Sundowns’ 38, with another 34 games drawn. Chiefs have outscored their opponents 128-126.
