Champions Orlando Pirates matched Mamelodi Sundowns’ record for the longest unbeaten run in away matches in the Premier Soccer League era following their 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants on Sunday.

But it was not their only record on the day, as Abdeslam Ouaddou became the first coach in the club’s PSL history to go on a 20-game unbeaten run.

The win took Pirates to within a point of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with a game in hand, as they made it six wins from seven league games (D1) this season, having still conceded only a single goal.

Pirates are unbeaten in their last 20 away matches in all competitions since a 3-0 thumping by St Eloi Lupopo of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Lubumbashi last October in the second round of last season’s CAF Champions League.

Sundowns went 20 away matches unbeaten between August 2020 and May 2021, when Al Ahly of Egypt ended their streak by beating them 2-0 in Cairo in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

In the PSL era, post-1996, Chiefs set a record of 16 unbeaten away games in all competitions in 1997 and then matched it again the following year.

In 2012, SuperSport United set a new record of 17 matches unbeaten on the road, which Chiefs equalled in 2016.

Sundowns then broke that record when they went 20 games unbeaten in the 2020/21 season, which included matches in the neutral bio-bubble held in Gauteng during the COVID-19 crisis.

Ouaddou also claimed the club record for unbeaten matches home and away.

He has one more than Ruud Krol, who went 19 games unbeaten in 2009, while Ted Dumitru led the club to 17 games unbeaten in 1999, and Kosta Papic achieved the same number in the 2004/05 season.

Krol also had another 16-game unbeaten run in the 2010/11 championship season.
