Arriving at the very end of summer 2023 for 45 million euros from Olympique Lyonnais, Barcola may feel he has completed his chapter in the French capital. After 39 goals and 37 assists in 152 appearances, the winger could be starting a new challenge in his career at the end of this summer transfer window.
French daily L'Équipe reported on Sunday that Barcola, a two-time Champions League winner, has decided not to continue negotiations with PSG over an extension.
As per the publication, Barcola had wanted to wait until after the World Cup before making a final decision on a contract extension. After several months of deliberation, the 23-year-old has opted to cease negotiations with PSG regarding this extension. This was a sporting decision, as the offer from the capital club included a substantial pay rise.
With his contract ending in two years, the French international is therefore likely to leave this summer to avoid being sold at a discount in 2027 or leaving for free in 2028.
Thus, Barcola could end up in the Premier League or the Bundesliga. Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are all allegedly interested in his services, as are Bayern Munich.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are currently leading the race for his signature.
The transfer market for wingers has been very active of late, and a sudden change of situation - like that of the Ivorian Yan Diomande with Real Madrid - is a good example of how volatile it can be. This means that the Barcola situation could take some time to be resolved. We should have an answer in the coming weeks, however.
