FC Midtjylland on Sunday afternoon bounced back from a 0-1 defeat against St. Truiden to take over top position in the Danish Superliga with a 3-2 win against Lyngby.

Following a European disappointment against St. Truiden on Thursday, FC Midtjylland bounced back in the Superliga on Sunday as bottom-placed Lyngby were defeated 2–3 after a performance from the Midtjylland side that was, at times, excellent.

The home side started the match much the stronger side, with the right flank—featuring national team player Rasmus Nissen Kristensen—finding plenty of space to operate.

After 17 minutes, this dominance paid off when South Korean striker Cho Gue-sung pounced on a loose ball in the box, ahead of several passive Lyngby defenders, to put Midtjylland 1–0 up.

Lyngby created little, but just past the half-hour mark, Simon Colyn equalized; midfielder Lauge Sandgrav won the ball from an overconfident Ousmane Diao and set up Lyngby’s leading goalscorer.

Philip Billing—who sat out the entire 0–1 defeat to St. Truiden—, however, managed to put the home side ahead 2-1 just before the break by confidently converting a penalty—awarded after Oskar Buur handled the ball.

Any newfound optimism for Lyngby took a major hit shortly after the restart when Friday Etim—despite a somewhat lackluster finish—extended the lead to 3-1 following a setup by midfielder Kjell Wätjen.

The home side appeared to be in control, but the final stages became tense after Gustav Fraulo narrowed the deficit shortly before the end of regulation time.

The former Midtjylland talent sent a direct free kick underneath the Midtjylland wall—where the home side had failed to position a player lying on the ground—and the gamble paid off.

Lyngby held possession for virtually the entire stoppage time but failed to create anything of real significance.

With this victory, FC Midtjylland now have 28 points from 12 matches, sitting at the top of the Superliga table. FC Copenhagen have 25 points ahead of their home match against OB on Monday.
