Brøndby IF are back in first place in the Danish Superliga. Both Viborg FF and FC Nordsjaelland had overtaken them with wins on Sunday, but a 3-1 home victory over Silkeborg IF put Brondby back on top.
Defender Jordi Vanlerberghe and young forward Oskar Fenger turned the match around early in the second half with goals each, after Callum McCowatt had fired Silkeborg into the lead during the first half.
Brondby captain Luis Binks sealed the win in the closing stages with his first goal of the season. The victory marks Brondby's fourth successive win, and the team has now collected 13 out of a possible 15 points since Thomas Norgaard took over as head coach.
Monday's match was off to a lively start as Rami Al Hajj, a midfielder by trade who was once again playing as the furthest man forward for Silkeborg, headed the ball against the crossbar, and the visitors also had a couple of penalty appeals.
Lightning-fast Lucas Riisgaard repeatedly tested the Brondby defense, though two penalty claims were overturned following VAR reviews.
At the other end, young forward Oskar Fenger squandered a one-on-one chance for Brondby, and it looked set to be a goalless first half until Silkeborg standout Callum McCowatt scored a spectacular goal in the 44th minute. The New Zealander fired a first-time volley from the edge of the box past Patrick Pentz, thereby adding to the price his suitors will have to pay to persuade Silkeborg to sell.
Brondby had enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but the payoff didn't come until the second half.
In the 51st minute, Jordi Vanlerberghe fired home the equalizer to make it 1–1, after his fellow defender Luis Binks had flicked the ball on following a corner kick.
Just a couple of minutes later, they took a 2–1 lead when Marcus Younis delivered a hard, low cross that Fenger simply had to steer in with the inside of his foot.
The match lost much of its pace in the second half. Silkeborg had sporadic chances but generally struggled to create significant opportunities in their pursuit of an equalizer.
Instead, Binks sealed the match from close range, heading Marko Divkovic’s free-kick past Aske Andresen.
