Mensur Sujlovic has issued an apology letter after drawing criticism at the Swiss Darts Trophy last weekend.

During his round-of-16 match against Ross Smith, Suljovic caused controversy by trying to rile up the crowd as Smith threw match darts. After Smith couldn't finish his checkout and Suljovic won, the Austrian celebrated wildly and exchanged a cold handshake with his English opponent.

After the match, Smith took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration with Suljovic's behaviour in Basel.

"I don't blame Mensur for losing this match. I missed two match darts. It's as simple as that," Smith said.

"Of course, I can't know what he does behind my back while I'm throwing - apart from the crowd's reactions. If he wants to be an absolute helmet, that's his business. Karma will catch up with him."

Suljovic then reacted to Smith's comments following his 6-1 quarterfinal win over Dirk van Duijvenbode, telling Smith he should've stayed home.

"Ross Smith is one of the best players in the world. What is the guy complaining about? He has to play his game. Otherwise he might as well go home. Women complain, sorry, you don't do that," Suljovic said.

"Whenever I'm in England, everyone is against me. They're against me everywhere. And now all of a sudden he's complaining. He might as well stay at home."

'Emotions took me a lot'

On Monday, Suljovic posted an apology letter on his Instagram account, explaining that he made the comments in the heat of the moment.

"The emotions took me a lot at that moment. I wanted to get the audience behind me and didn't really realise that Ross was just throwing at his match darts," Suljovic explained.

"In retrospect, I understand that the timing was unfortunate and was perceived as unfair. I would like to apologise to Ross for this. Ross is for me one of the best players in the world, and I have a great respect for him and his performance."

Regarding his alleged sexist comments about Smith's complaints, Suljovic continued to rely on emotion.

"My statement in the interview about women was also completely inappropriate. I should never have said that. I would like to apologise to all women for this. Darts thrive on emotions - but fairness and respect are just as much a part of it. Yesterday, the emotions overtook me a bit," Suljovic said.

"Sorry about that."

Following his comments and antics, the PDC referred Suljovic to the Darts Regulation Authority for incitement of jeers and alleged sexist comments, it confirmed on Monday.
