SG Flensburg-Handewitt suffered their first defeat of the season in the Handball-Bundesliga on Sunday. Coach Ales Pajovic's side lost 31–30 (14–11) away to VfL Gummersbach after a hard-fought battle and are now third in the Bundesliga table. Danish goalkeeper Bertram Obling played a main role in stifling the otherwise fearsome Flensburg attack.

"We had our chances, but missed too many of them," Pajovic told Dyn. "That really hurt the boys, but they gave everything."

Gummersbach ruthlessly exploit Flensburg's weaknesses

Flensburg entered the matchday as the only unbeaten team of the German Bundesliga, but faced a stern test against the former champions in the raucous Schwalbe Arena. The visitors repeatedly had to fight back from deficits and rarely managed to take control of the game.

Backcourt player Nikola Roganovic, who scored 12 goals, and goalkeeper Bertram Obling, who made 18 saves, stood out for Gummersbach. Simon Pytlick and Emil Jakobsen each scored seven times for Flensburg.
