As a large crash took out a large portion of the peloton on the final corner of the stage, Jensen Plowright (Alpecin-Premier Tech) initiated the final sprint. As he ran out of energy, Pedersen slipped through a small gap to his right while Max Walscheid launched an attack on the other side of the road. Pedersen, however, produced enough speed to defeat the experienced German and hold off the fast-finishing Tom Crabbe.
Van Aert recorded his first overall stage race win in three years after the Belgian dispelled the memories of the injury that kept him out of the Tour de France.
"I’ll especially remember the three consecutive stage wins. That’s something I’ve never experienced before, and—particularly after a long period of training following my injury—it wasn’t something I had expected. So that will certainly stay with me," said the Belgian after the race
Van Aert's teammate Christophe Laporte came close to snatching the third-place spot from Henrik Breiner Pedersen, but the Dane held onto his place on the podium.
Lukas Kobis (Unibet) from Slovakia finished second in the general classification.
