The huge task facing Kaizer Chiefs ahead of second leg against Red Arrows

Kaizer Chiefs will have it all to do when they host Red Arrows in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second-round tie, and history is not on their side.

They have welcomed Zambian clubs three times before in African club competition and lost two of those matches, to ZESCO United (2018/19) and Nchanga Rangers (2000). This looks a tall order against a very competent Arrows team.

In fact, Zambian clubs have inflicted two of Chiefs’ five home defeats in African competition. In their nine previous home matches in the Confederation Cup, they have won six, drawn one and lost twice, to ZESCO and Ivorian side ASEC Abidjan.

Overall, their record on their own patch in African club competition is strong, though.

They have hosted 36 games and won 25 of them, to go with six draws and five defeats.

That is a healthy 69% winning record, and they will need another home victory if they are to progress to the group stage this year.

Aside from the Zambian duo, their other CAF club competition home losses have come against Ivorian outfit ASEC Abidjan twice, once in the CAF Champions League (2016) and once in the Confederation Cup (2014), and Raja Casablanca from Morocco in the Champions League (2015).

Overall, Amakhosi have battled against Zambian opponents in general.

Zambian clubs have won four of seven meetings with Chiefs, a 57.1% winning rate, while Chiefs have failed to score in three of their seven meetings with teams from the Southern African nation, including the latest defeat to Arrows.

In fact, Chiefs have never beaten Zambian opposition in a two-legged knockout tie, having been eliminated by Nchanga Rangers in 2000 and ZESCO in 2018/19.

Arrows have now won their last four fixtures in the Confederation Cup, three of them this season, during which they have not conceded a goal.

They won 2-0 away to Madagascar side Rouge in the last round, but before that were winless in six away games in the competition (D2 L4). They did not score a goal in any of those matches.
