Jesper Jensen is officially returning to Team Esbjerg as head coach. The Danish club announced that he has signed a three-year contract and will officially take the reins in the summer of 2027.

Jensen will replace Swedish coach Tomas Axnér, who is stepping down at the end of the 2026–27 season to focus exclusively on his role as the head coach of the Swedish women's national team

Jensen is currently coaching Hungarian powerhouse Ferencváros TC (FTC). He requested to end his contract there a year ahead of its 2028 expiration due to family reasons, wanting to return home to Denmark.

"The timing just turned out to be right," explains Jesper Jensen regarding his job change, which takes effect next summer.

"I wanted to return home to my family. I made that decision about a month ago. They were very respectful and allowed me to leave, for which I am extremely grateful."

"Then a process began to determine what I would do next. That process was very short-lived, as all signs pointed toward Esbjerg."

"Being within cycling distance of my workplace is a privilege for me. I’ve experienced it before, and I really appreciate it. So, it was an easy choice for me," says Jesper Jensen.

Several things did not go as planned after Jesper Jensen decided—back in the spring of 2025—to become a coach in Hungary on a three-year contract.

Among other things, Jesper Jensen’s wife fell ill following knee surgery. She developed several blood clots in her leg and was hospitalized for more than a month.

Furthermore, a planned flight route from Billund to Budapest was discontinued, making travel back and forth between Hungary and Denmark difficult. Consequently, the family saw less of each other than originally intended.

"It really comes down to the fact that I’ve ended up being down here on my own for two years. We faced some challenges just before I moved here, when my wife suffered complications from a botched surgery."
